i see

My name is Lizzy Sawdon.  I am a photographer.  I love to take pictures of life and the extraordinary world I live in.  Early morning on Four Mile Beach, afternoon on Macrossan Street, sunset at Rex Smeal Park, a fallen mango leaf in my garden...

I am essentially drawn to social documentary photography and this has led me to specialise in Wedding Photojournalism.

Based in Port Douglas, Far North Queensland, I am available for commission throughout Australia and overseas [weddings, editorial, commercial, documentary].

laura and norman | a fairytale

Once upon a time, a prince and a princess met somewhere on the other side of the world, in the land of ice and frozen fairies, somewhere where neither of them, nor her nor him, was expecting it to happen. Yet, they stood facing each other on a summer day and smiling they shaked hands. From that moment, their worlds were shaken too.

So innocent they were about how difficult it would be to be apart, about how difficult it would be to be together – after all, he was from the land of red cliffs and purple jungles and her home was in the land of grapes and cornfields – but, now, they were in love, and one day they would have to say goodbye.

That day came, and the raspberry loving princess had to leave and go home. She had to leave him. Well, the night before she left, the prince gave her a glowing mushroom, “This is my heart…” he whispered, “…and now that you have it I will come back for it”; he said and holds her tight. They had decided they were going to stay together, no matter what. ‘But where?’ was the question…

So, they travelled the world together, they cried, they smiled and laughed; they shared everything as they sacrificed everything. The only thing they wanted was to wake up facing each other, warm and holding hands, like on the day they met.

what a perfectly sweet way to start 2010.  laura and norman’s wedding.  i met laura in their hotel room a couple of hours before the intimate ceremony at st. mary’s by the sea.  when i arrived, i was completely out of breath after walking up some stairs on what felt like the hottest day on record.  laura asked me if i walked over – rydges resort is just across the road from my place – to which i shamefully replied “ah, from the carpark…”  pitiful – i’m so unfit.  norman was sitting down by the pool trying to relax, apparently a little nervous of what lay ahead of him.  laura and norman are simply adorable and it was a nice way to spend the afternoon – despite the heat, the sweat, the mosquitoes feasting on us and the sun burning my retina – there is nothing i would rather do than clown around with a couple of newly weds, completely in love and embracing life on a stinking hot Port Douglas day.

the vows were unique and told the story of how they met in a fairytale narrative, i don’t have it now but will post it with the bride and groom’s permission, soon… and here it is  – a fairytale.

Chelsea - ahhh bliss, these are just perfect photos. Loving the lens blur. Good job Lizzy.February 14, 2010 - 9:43 pm

Sweetwater Lodge ~ Julatten, Far North Queensland

Our close friends Wendy and Glenn Cambage live on a breathtakingly beautiful property situated in Julatten, in the Cairns Highlands.  Last year, with the help of my partner Darren [master builder and carpenter] they completed two unique accommodation lodges, private luxury retreat Sweetwater Lodge.  Just before the Christmas break, I visited Wendy, following their first guests’ magical stay.  This was the first time I’d seen the lodges completed and I couldn’t wait to take some photographs – under strict instruction to avoid any untidy areas – so i only took a few images.  The furniture and balustrade have been crafted by Glenn, interior design and decoration by Wendy – though note the above images show the lodge minus Wendy’s welcoming finer touches.  The initial plan was a collaboration of Wendy and Glenn’s creative genius and architecture design by Angus Crowe.  Darren Heatley transformed the project from paper to reality.  A seed of an idea planted 5 years or so ago has finally come to fruition!  The eco lodges are in a tranquil setting abundant with wildlife and birdlife, bordered by pristine Hunter’s Creek featuring a deep swimming hole to cool off in with the resident platypus.  Stay tuned for more images of a lodge decked out for the arrival of some guests…or Wendy will kill me!

engagement photography ~ port douglas

Pretty Beach, 2008.  It was late in the afternoon and the light was fading.  These images are of a young newly engaged couple, with their little puppy bouncing around by their side.  I’m sad to say the wedding didn’t go ahead, so I’m leaving out names, but at the time, they were sweet and in love.  I made a composite of the top image which I’m trying to locate – my digital asset management is in need of support – but in the meantime, you can see the award winning image ! on my [ag]wpja profile.  Warning – it’s very rough, but still cute.

tyre swing tree ~ old kambul farm, biboora

This was taken at sunrise at Chrissie & Henry’s [friends of ours] farm in 2008.  Henry’s daughter Bala, 16 at the time, had agreed to be my subject for a portrait shoot.  This beautiful old tree is a favourite of Chrissie’s so we wanted it to feature in the image.  We scattered the props in the field and set the camera up.  This is detail of the frame I shot while getting the exposure right and waiting for Bala.  Bala’s portraits are in my portfolio and represent the sometimes awkward beauty of a girl child growing up.

Mt. Carbine Bullride ~ 8th August 2009

Last year after a big wedding, we ventured up the hill to Mt. Carbine to watch some cowboys do what they do, and wonder why they do it…

stephen henry - these take me there. I love the last one!!!January 28, 2010 - 1:44 am

Kristie & Marco ~ 1st August 2009

I promised myself I would update my blog with 2009 weddings over the christmas break… and finally I have begun!  Kristie & Marco were married at Sea Temple, Port Douglas.  I met them the day before for a drink and immediately fell in love with the two of them.  Kristie, with her beautiful smile and Canadian accent – she moved to Australia after meeting Marco while traveling – and Marco – , what else can I say?  They are divine and the love is overflowing…

Kristie and Marco’s wedding was simply, beautiful.  And as a bonus I also spent the entire day with gifted port douglas photographer Martine Cotton [second shooter] and awesome film maker [and photographer] Alison George of Catseye Productions [wedding video].  I love this job.
